The Sea, Selections from the First International Miyuki Delica Challenge edited by Barry Kahn
ISBN 0-9664319-0-1, Softcover, 104 pages, $19.95, Caravan Beads, Inc., Portland, Maine

In September 1997, beadwork was judged and with much difficulty, final choices were made.  The Sea highlights 84 beaders and their work from that challenge in full delicious color.   Every single beadwork is splendid.  A full page is dedicated to each piece and then information follows about the object and the beader.   It is so refreshing to look at the beadwork and read what the beader has to say rather than just a little title listed below the item.  There is a direct link to the beader, how that person works, what ideas they want to express and where they get their ideas.   As I read each page and looked at the beadwork, I felt each beader was talking directly to me.

Barry Kahn, owner of Caravan Beads, explains what the challenge was all about and  there is a very interesting and entertaining write up by Carolyn Mitchell, co-founder of Caravan Beads.

I do wish they had included the overall size of each beadwork, as it was guess work as to the size of the sculptures.   As I looked through all this glorious beadwork, I was surprised to see my name mentioned.  Mary Winters-Meyer, 3rd prize winner, Seascape Surprises, gave me kudos for inspiration and experimentation in one of my classes.  I was touched at such generosity.  Mary designed her sculpture so that a candle can be placed behind it, make the beads glow and it looks like you are gazing through an aquarium.     Reading the description makes you realize all the planning and research required to create this unique artwork.

The cover page of The Sea is a blow up  of Ocean Artisan, a beaded purse, by Jane Davis.  This work is also listed as 3rd prize, which is confusing.  This is a mermaid motif that is just exquisite.  The beading is back stitched on canvas and the mermaid is making a necklace.  A dolphin and fish are watching.  It is a real heirloom charmer.

As you look at each beadwork, you will find each and every one just as enticing and endearing.   At the back of the book is common beadweaving techniques with illustrations and instructions, recommended reading and retail stores for Miyuki Delicas beads.  There is also a description of the Delica Challenge for 1999 and information for entry forms.  After looking through this book, I immediately had to take stock of my Delicas and print out the rules for the next challenge, which is Myths and Folktales of the World.  The Sea is a real inspiration; treat yourself to a book you will enjoy over and over again.
