Cooper Softcover, 28 pages, $19.95, Suzanne Cooper, Inc., PO Box 445, Spring Branch, Texas 78070 If you are looking for purse patterns with frames and using peyote and brick stitch, here it is. It is assumed that you already know the beading techniques; no how-to instructions or illustrations are provided. If this was book two of a series, I could understand not wanting to repeat all the how- to instructions, but it is not. This is a pet peeve for me, because many old craft patterns of the 1800s also assume you understand the techniques and so patterns can not be finished except by guessing. What people currently know how to do, may not mean beans to new beaders 10 years from now. All the patterns are planned to fit the frames using Delica beads, so if you are using other beads you will have to make adjustments to the patterns. There are a few notes on choice of linings, attaching the frames, two methods for finishing the patterns without attaching frames, and the bracelets that accompany the purses with a like motif. There are 12 patterns for larger purses and 12 patterns with smaller motifs from the larger patterns. There is a photo of each antique purse, where the original pattern comes from (person or company) Cooper used as a basis for the patterns she created. Color photos of the large and small bag and bracelet accompanies each project. A full color page is dedicated to graphs for all three items of each project. No instructions are provided for the dangles/fringe at the bottom of the purses. The graphs are color coded, easy to follow and very clear. Victorian Garden is my favorite and is the largest of the patterns. It has bouquets of flowers and butterflies dancing around them. She did include a pattern for the small square stitch butterflies that hang down in the fringe at the bottom and could also be used separately as embellishment on other items such as dolls. Cooper gives credit to other beaders that designed elements or beaded one of the bags for the book. If you do not knit or crochet, here is a way to have some antique looking bags using beading techniques. People will think you have bags from the 1800's Victorian era when you wear them.
