| The Crochet Workbook by Sylvia Cosh & James Walters ISBN 0-312-04032-6, Softcover, 96 pages, $16.95, St. Martin's Press, 174 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10010 All I can say is WOW! What a crocheter's delight! Here is an innovative experimental try it crochet techniques power house book that will get your mind moving. I was so excited to open the pages of this book and see such adventures ahead. There is a great little introduction and a "sorry" statement that illustrations are only for right-handed people and then when you start through the crochet how-to there are all the left-hand instructions. It must have been included at the last minute. There are ideas expressed about what crochet is all about and yarn into fabric. Basic techniques are explained with illustrations and explanations and then we jump into free-form crochet, oh yes! Here you learn to make doodles, scumbles, all kinds of pieces that can be put together to make a larger item. The color images of various yarn textures combined is so mouth watering, I can hardly control myself! There is this gorgeous scumbled beret a gal is wearing in one photo that I would love to have on my head. Now all I have to do is get some yarn and hooks together and go! Every page is a smashing color delight with texture everywhere. I can not begin to tell you how many ideas have pounced out of my head as I look through all these pages. Three-dimensional shapes are exciting, especially the sculpted pieces on page 63. Next is a mind map key, which as I look at the illustrations, is pretty much the way my mind is mapped out. Then stimulus is covered which looks exactly the way most of us fiber people plan, What! Sources in nature are a real guide and color images just lead you to more ideas. After you have gone through all the how-to of techniques, you can make your own creations including clothing, hats and a cape that is out of this WORLD! I want, I want, I want and you will too! This cape has textured scumbles all around the yoke and then works out to flatter stitches. You have to create your own and a map guide is there to help. If you want to be adventurous, you need this book, if you want to eye-goggle color and texture, you need this book, and if you want inspiration, you need this book. The Crochet Workbook is a real prize for crocheters and a joy to own. |
