Pillow
Party by Pamela Lindquist This is the second book for Pamela Lindquist, author of Sweet Dreams, another home decorating book. Sure to appeal to sewers and quitters, Pillow Party unravels the sometimes baffling techniques involved in making a variety of gorgeous pillows and pillow coverings. The book includes instructions for four basic styles; rectangular and square pillows, shaped pillows and neck rolls. Basic instructions demonstrate how to plan a pillow; from simple knife-edge pillows to box-edged pillows with covered cording. A description of basic sewing tools and a sewing glossary enable a beginner to start the process. In many ways, the book is a mini-course in quilting, as it includes techniques such as cutting bias strips, appliqué, making half-square triangle units, trapunto, and machine and hand quilting. The book is perfect for the sewer who would like to try his or her hand at quilting, but does not want to tackle a full sized quilt. You could work your way through the book, making what would basically be a series of mini-quilt tops in many different styles. The basic techniques for pillow making are also covered; such as ruffles, covered cording, closures and fastening. A wonderful variety of styles are offered as completed projects; whole cloth trapunto, Tudor Rose appliqué, pieced, shaped and ruffled. Instructions are included for squares, rectangles, round, heart shaped and neck rolls, as well as pillow shams and decorative pillow cases. Pillow Party is sure to appeal to people wanting to add unique decorative elements to their home, and to quilters who want to do something useful with the “orphan” blocks that we tend to accumulate over time. This is also good for sampling a new quilting technique without committing to a large quilt that too often ends up as a “U.F.O.” or unfinished object. Each of the projects is a beautiful, unique, stand-alone work of art to keep or give away as a gift. The instructions are clearly written, well illustrated and easy to follow. Review by Diana Norris |
