Bead Knitted Purses by Anne L. Clement
Spiralbound, 16 pgs, $20.00, includes S&H in USA, Anne L. Clement, email Aclement01@aol.com, website http://hometown.aol.com/beadknitte/myhomepage/index.html

In the introduction Anne states how she became interested in bead knitted bags and her reasons for writing this book. She includes some tips for bead knitting that are helpful, especially for beginners. There is a supply list and beads size 11/0 are used for some of the projects and 8/0 for others. There is an instructional sheet on threading the beads and then the patterns start. Each pattern is worked in the round.

The front cover has a color image of the finished bags. There are five bead knitted purse patterns included with step-by-step instructions for making them. Each purse requires a metal frame and the frame length is included for each bag ranging from 2" to 5.5" in length. The bags range from two small squatty shaped bags, to a cigarette shaped case and two rectangular shaped bags, one larger than the other and both having wider bases than the top opening. The bags range from 2" x 4" to 7" x 8."

These bags have a 1930’s to 1950’s look. They are covered with bead knitting and do not have specific patterns worked onto the surface.

Each pattern of stitches are listed with the basic beginning portion and then as the stitches change, they are each listed on a separate line which makes it easy to follow and not lose your place. There are no page numbers listed in the book which I found a problem since I like to refer to a specific page when talking about a particular technique or image.

There are four pages of color photo images which include how to pre-string beads onto the thread; images of bead knitting a purse; positions of hands for tension; finger positions for working and holding needles and other related techniques. Two of those pages have color images of pinning a purse to a frame and the finished bag after the fringe and frame are added; images of each of the others bags, some depicting the bag open and closed while others show bags closed only. It would have been nice if the color images were clearer, however, they are clear enough to easily follow.

Some of my viewers have emailed me that Bead Knitted Purses has very easy to follow instructions and they have made several bags using the instructions and formulas. This is a good basic book for beginners to learn to knit with beads and make some lovely bags at the same time.
