The
Quilter’s Directory of Embellishments
by Sally Holman Everything you ever need to learn about embellishments for quilts is within these pages. Sally has laid out this book in a beautiful format; the color and layout set to pleasure the eyes. There are 41 subjects listed in the table of contents, from choosing fabric, embellishments and tools to appliqués, quilting, embellishing with decorative stitches including embroidery - handwork and machine stitches, outline stitches, insertion stitches, hand printed fabrics, couching, weaving, dimensional work, painting with various materials and a whole lot more. Each technique section includes a featured block, symbols at a glance, materials to get started, materials samples, illustrations, step-by-step instructions, tips and other techniques that are related to the featured technique. In the quilt gallery there is a close-up of the block, with smaller photos of a block section along with details, and some are complete quilts with gorgeous scenic designs. Buttons, thread, mirrors, seed beads, tassels, charms, lace motifs and found objects are some of the items used as embellishment. There are over 30 embellishment techniques. I found the weaving techniques fascinating; weaving beautiful ribbons through netting and then making a quilt with these pieces. I love the embroidery techniques with shadow stitching and three dimensional florals. The Quilters Directory is packed full of new ideas for embellishing and creating quilts for every quilter’s taste. |
