| BEADIFFERENT, Make Wire Beads by Lisa Van Herik ISBN 0-9675725-0-9, Spiralbound, 64pgs, $18.95 plus $3.50 S&H, Lisa Van Herik, PO Box 2475, La Jolla, CA 92038, phone 858-551-0227, fax 858-551-1708, email lisavh@earthlink.net This is a whole new approach to wirework - wire beads in all shapes and sizes. The cover page has over 30 different wire beads. If crocheting wire beads is too hard on your hands, you will find some equivalent shapes to work using Lisas techniques. The first page inside is a guide to the beads outside, a number is next to each bead so you can easily identify it and find the instruction for the particular bead you want to make. There is an About the Author page which describes her diverse background in design and an introduction. Next she has a brief page of special tips, individual bead instructions and notes about the projects. Supplies, tools and dowels along with wire information is included followed by definition of terms . Basic Techniques and Finishing Techniques are general instructions for all beads. Patterns begin with easy shapes and work to the more complex. Each bead has a black and white photo that is easy to see along with all the instructions for that specific bead. Bead types are broken down into sections. There are scrunch beads, random wind beads, specialty beads and additional recipes for more unique shapes. Some are long spirals while others are short fat smashed down beads, squiggly worm beads, fat open circular beads, just about every shape you can imagine. Each bead includes some comments about variations, indications if the bead is a more traditional, classic or whimsical bead. Lisa includes a few necklaces with beads strung to give you an idea of how they look on a finished piece. Some beads have a coil in the middle and then one wire sticking out at each end, allowing more than one textural effect. Some beads are very dense while others seem very open and airy. I can just imagine 5 to 10 of one of these beads spread between other beaded beads on a necklace, it would have great contrast. They could be added between bead crocheted beads too. The instructions are easy to follow and the basic techniques includes all the illustrations you will need to make the beads. Lisa covers everything you need to make these beads including how to connect one bead to another, using sandpaper and steel wool, gouging, crimping and stretching the coil out and whether you want to add a patina to the finished bead. Lisa includes a supplier list at the back of the book which is very helpful to those who do not have local suppliers.
